Get Rowdy Swim Meet will Feature Pool’s Namesake
Gold medalist, NBC commentator Rowdy Gaines will be on-hand to sign copies of his recent biography.
WINTER HAVEN – Held at the facility named after the man synonymous with competitive swimming in Central Florida, the Winter Haven Stingrays will host their annual “Get Rowdy” swim meet from Friday, Sept. 16 to Sunday, Sept. 18, at the Rowdy Gaines Olympic Pool, 210 Cypress Gardens Blvd, SW, in Winter Haven.
A special twist to the event this year will be a book signing by the facility’s namesake, Ambrose “Rowdy” Gaines. Originally from Winter Haven, Gaines won three gold medals in the 1984 Summer Olympics and just recently covered swimming for NBC during the 2016 Summer Olympics. He’ll be signing copies of his autobiography, “Rowdy Gaines: From Rejected to Unrivaled,” Sept. 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event is the Stingrays annual short course swim meet. Sixteen teams will participate, including the Monmouth Barracudas from Monmouth, N.J., the only out of state team in the meet. In total, 570 swimmers will take to the pool.
The Stingrays are a member of USA Swimming and are sponsored by the City of Winter Haven and supported by the Stingray Parent Association.
The meet, as well as the book signing, are both open to the public. The action starts Friday at 5 p.m. or Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
