Before they throw out their first pitch for the 2007 Spring Training season, the American League Champion Detroit Tigers, along with the Cleveland Indians, will tee it up on the golf course in February. The 12th Annual Major League Scramble, presented by Mosaic, will take place Monday, February 26 at The Club at Eaglebrooke in Lakeland and will begin with registration at 11:00 a.m. and a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. For the 12th time, the two clubs, which both train in Polk County, will get together to benefit local youth sports organizations. Polk County Sports Marketing organizes the tournament and all proceeds from the event will go to local youth sports organizations selected by the two teams. New to the event this year, in addition to the afternoon round of golf with current Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians, is a morning round consisting of 10 teams paired with Major League Baseball Alumni. Registration for that round will begin at 7:00 a.m. with the shotgun start promptly at 8:00 a.m. The scramble began as a way for Polk County’s Spring Training teams to come together and play in a charity event that benefits the local community and to promote their upcoming seasons. The Tigers will donate their share of the proceeds to the Detroit Tigers Foundation of Florida, which benefits Lakeland youth organizations and local charities, while the Indians will donate their portion of the proceeds to the Winter Haven Youth Recreation Fund, which benefits youth sports in Winter Haven. Each golfer who registers for the 12th Annual Major League Scramble will play 18 holes of golf with a player, coach or executive from the Indians or Tigers organization or a Major League Baseball Alumni. Each participant will receive a goodie bag filled with Indians and Tigers collectibles and memorabilia. Also included in the cost of registration is lunch and dinner at The Club at Eaglebrooke. Golfers will be accommodated on a first come, first served basis. “We look forward to staging another great Major League Scramble and are excited to bring these two great teams together for what has turned into the kickoff event for Spring Training in Polk County,” said Mark Jackson, Director of Polk County Tourism & Sports Marketing. Prizes will be awarded to each member of the top three teams as well as the individual golfers who record the longest drives and the tee shots landing closest to the pin. There will also be several on course contests that players will be able to participate in. The tournament begins with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. and will be followed by a reception and awards presentation.
